George Lindsay, known as the 3rd Lord Spynie, was an important Scottish nobleman who lived a long time ago, in the 1600s. He was a strong supporter of the king during a very difficult time in Scottish history.

A Scottish Nobleman's Story

George Lindsay was the second son of Alexander Lindsay, who was the 2nd Lord Spynie. His mother was Lady Margaret Hay. When his father passed away in 1646, George became the new Lord Spynie. This meant he inherited his father's lands and title.

Standing Up for the King

George Lindsay was a loyal supporter of Charles I of Great Britain, who was the King at that time. King Charles I was facing many challenges and conflicts. Lord Spynie did not agree with the idea of handing the king over to the English forces.

A Role in the Army

Lord Spynie was a colonel, which is a high-ranking officer, in the army. He led soldiers from the areas of Stirling and Clackmannan. In 1648, he took part in a plan to try and rescue the king from the English. This event was known as the 'engagement'. Later, in 1650, he was chosen to be one of the colonels for the horse soldiers in Forfarshire.

Facing Difficult Times

Life became very challenging for Lord Spynie. In 1651, he was captured during the battle of Worcester. After his capture, he was sent to the Tower of London on September 16. The Tower of London was a famous prison.

Losing His Lands

In 1654, a new law called Cromwell's Act of Grace was passed. This law did not offer a pardon to Lord Spynie. Because of this, he lost all his lands and possessions. His estates were officially taken away from him at the Edinburgh Market Cross on May 5.

A New Beginning

Things changed for Lord Spynie in 1660. This was when the king was brought back to power, an event known as the Restoration. Lord Spynie received a pardon and was given back all his lands and titles.

Becoming a Family Leader

In 1666, another important person, Ludovic Lindsay, the 16th Earl of Crawford, passed away. Lord Spynie was recognized as his heir. This meant that George Lindsay became the main leader and representative of the entire Lindsay family. He was a very important figure in his family's history.

The End of a Title

George Lindsay, the 3rd Lord Spynie, passed away sometime before December 1671. He did not have any children to inherit his title. Because of this, the title of 'Lord Spynie' ended with him. It became extinct, meaning it no longer existed after his death.
