George Louch (1746–1811) was an English cricketer and someone who helped organize cricket games a long time ago, in the 1700s. He was especially known for being great at fielding, which means catching and stopping the ball. He was also an important early member of the Marylebone Cricket Club, a very famous cricket club.

George Louch's Cricket Life

George was born in Chatham, a town in Kent, England. He went to Westminster school. He played cricket regularly for the Chatham Cricket Club until 1773. After a break, he started playing again in 1783.

He played in 134 important cricket matches during his career. This was a huge number of games for his time! Only two other players, the Earl of Winchilsea and William Bullen, played nearly as many matches as George Louch did when he stopped playing.

A Close Call on the Field

In August 1789, something very scary happened to George Louch. News reports said that he was hit by a cricket ball during a game. The ball was hit so hard that it went into his body. Luckily, George was very tough! He survived this serious injury. He was even back playing cricket the very next season.

His Passing

George Louch passed away on April 29, 1811, in Ramsgate, after a short illness. The Kentish Gazette newspaper wrote about his death on May 7, 1811. They said he was "deeply regretted by all who knew him," which means everyone who knew him was very sad to see him go.
