George Lumley's Family History
George Lumley was the only son of Thomas Lumley, 2nd Baron Lumley. His mother was Margaret Harington. George's great-grandfather, Ralph Lumley, was given the title of Baron Lumley by King Richard II. However, Ralph later lost his title and was executed. This happened because he was involved in a rebellion against King Henry IV.
George's father, Thomas, worked hard to get the family title back. In 1461, his cousin, King Edward IV, restored the title. This meant Thomas became Baron Lumley. When Thomas died in 1485, George became the next Baron Lumley.
George Lumley's Career and Service
George Lumley held many important jobs throughout his life. He was the Sheriff of Northumberland from 1462 to 1463. A sheriff was like a chief officer in a county, responsible for law and order. He was also a Knight of the Shire in 1466. This meant he represented his county in Parliament. He served as Sheriff of Northumberland again from 1468 to 1471.
George Lumley was also a soldier. He was one of the leaders for the Duke of Gloucester (who later became King Richard III). They helped retake the town of Berwick from Scotland in 1482. He served in Scotland again in 1502. This time, he was under the command of the Earl of Surrey. In 1503, he was part of the English group that escorted Princess Margaret to Scotland. She was going there to marry the Scottish king.
Marriage and Children
George Lumley married Elizabeth Thornton. Elizabeth was the daughter of Roger Thornton, a very rich merchant from Newcastle. Her mother was Elizabeth Greystoke. George and Elizabeth had three sons: Thomas, Ralph, and Roger. Their oldest son and heir, Thomas, married a daughter of King Edward IV.
Elizabeth brought a lot of wealth to the family through her inheritance. However, her family also had some disagreements. George Lumley gained several estates through his marriage. But Elizabeth's half-brother, Giles Thornton, argued about who should inherit these lands. This dispute caused a lot of conflict.
Death and Succession
George Lumley is believed to have died in 1509. Some records say he died in 1508. His oldest son, Thomas, had died before him. Because of this, the title of Baron Lumley passed to George's grandson, Richard Lumley, 4th Baron Lumley.
