Thomas Lumley's Family History
Thomas Lumley was born in 1408 in a place called Morpeth in Northumberland, England. His grandfather, Ralph Lumley, was made the first Baron Lumley by King Richard II. However, Ralph Lumley lost his title and lands. This happened because he was involved in a rebellion against King Henry IV.
Thomas's father, John, got the family's lands back. But he did not get the title of Baron. Thomas's mother was Felicia Redmayne. Her father, Sir Matthew Redmayne, was a governor of important castles.
Thomas Lumley's Career and Service
Thomas Lumley had a long and successful career serving different kings. He worked for kings from both the House of Lancaster and the House of York. In 1434, he led a group of soldiers and archers overseas.
Between 1449 and 1461, he helped with peace talks with Scotland many times. He was a trusted person for the king during these important discussions. In 1455, he was given a special job for life. He became the governor of Scarborough Castle. This showed how much the king trusted him.
Even though he served King Henry VI for a long time, Thomas Lumley strongly supported Edward IV. When Edward IV became king in 1461, Lumley was a close relative of the new king. Lumley asked the king to give his family back the Baron title. King Edward IV agreed and made him the second Baron Lumley. He was called to join the Parliament as Baron Lumley in 1461.
Thomas Lumley was a very important person at King Edward IV's court. In 1465, he was sent on a special mission. He tried to convince the King of Scots to marry someone from Edward's family. This mission was not successful, but it showed his importance.
