The George Madison Millard House is a special home in Highland Park, Illinois. It was designed by a famous architect named Frank Lloyd Wright. This house was built in 1906 and is a great example of his "Prairie School" style. It was the first of two homes Wright designed for the Millard family.

The Story of the Millard House

Who Were the Millards?

George Madison Millard worked in Chicago, Illinois. He managed the rare book section at a company called A. C. McClurg. There, he met Alice Parsons, who later became his wife. They got married in London in 1901.

The Millards knew Frank Lloyd Wright, a very famous architect. When they moved from Chicago to Highland Park, they asked Wright to design their new home. This house was finished in 1906.

What is Prairie School Style?

The George Madison Millard House is a great example of Wright's "Prairie School" design. This style often features low, horizontal lines, like the flat landscape of the American prairie. The house has a cross shape when you look at its floor plan.

The outside walls are made of brown-stained wood. They have a special design called board and batten siding. The roof is gently sloped, with wide overhangs that stick out about 3.5 feet. Frank Lloyd Wright even included drawings of this house in a special book of his designs called the Wasmuth Portfolio.

Moving to California

In 1913, the Millards moved to Pasadena, California. George retired from his job at McClurg. After George passed away, Alice continued his work. She also sold old furniture.

Alice liked Wright's work so much that she asked him to design another house for her. This second home, also called the Millard House, was built in Pasadena in 1923.
