George Pitt Rose (born January 7, 1797, died September 19, 1851) was an important British politician and soldier. He was known as a Major in the army. He also served as a Member of Parliament, or MP, for the town of Christchurch. He came from a family with strong political connections.

George Pitt Rose's Early Years

George Pitt Rose was born to George Henry Rose and Frances Duncombe. His mother, Frances, came from a very wealthy family in Yorkshire. In 1815, George went to study at St John's College, Cambridge, which is a famous university.

His Career in the Military and Politics

George Pitt Rose started his military career in 1822. He joined the 15th Hussars, which was a cavalry regiment, as a Cornet. This was a junior officer rank. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1824. Then, he became a Captain in 1826. Later, in 1841, he reached the rank of Major. In 1847, he also became a Captain in the 5th Foot.

While serving in the army, George also entered politics. In the 1826 general election, his father was already an MP for Christchurch. His father helped George become the second MP for the same area. George was elected as a Tory MP. He continued to serve as an MP through the elections of 1830 and 1831.

Family Life

George Pitt Rose married Phoebe Susannah Vesey on April 30, 1828. Phoebe was the daughter of Major-General John Agmondesham Vesey. George and Phoebe had one son together, named George Ernest Rose.

Their son, George Ernest Rose, also joined the army, just like his father. He fought in the Crimean War. He also worked as an aide-de-camp, which is like a personal assistant, for his uncle, General Hugh Rose, during the Indian Mutiny. Sadly, George Ernest Rose died in Calcutta in 1865 when he was 27 years old.

George Pitt Rose himself passed away in Winchester on September 19, 1851. Even though he didn't leave a will, his wife and son were still taken care of. They received money from a special fund set up in his father's will. His wife also had an annual payment that was arranged in 1833.
