George Ramsay (born April 26, 1806, died July 20, 1880) was an important British naval officer. He was known as George Ramsay for most of his life. Later, he became the 12th Earl of Dalhousie. He spent many years serving in the Royal Navy.
George Ramsay was the son of John Ramsay. His father was a Lieutenant-General in the army. George joined the Royal Navy in 1820. This was when he was just 14 years old. He worked hard and moved up in rank.
In 1856, he received a special award. He was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath. This is an honor given for excellent service.
Important Commands
From 1866 to 1869, George Ramsay had a very important job. He was the Commander-in-Chief of the South East Coast of America Station. This meant he was in charge of all British naval ships in that area. It was a big responsibility.
In 1875, he reached the highest rank. He was promoted to admiral. This showed his long and successful career.
Becoming an Earl
In 1874, George Ramsay became the 12th Earl of Dalhousie. This happened after his cousin passed away. The title of Earl is a noble rank in Britain.
The next year, in 1875, he received another special title. He was made Baron Ramsay. This title was for Glenmark, in Scotland. These titles meant he was part of the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This is a group of people with high social rank.
Family and Later Life
George Ramsay had a son named Charles Maule Ramsay. Charles also became a soldier and a politician.
George Ramsay, the 12th Earl of Dalhousie, died in July 1880. He was 74 years old. His eldest son, John, took over his title.
