George Arthur Rogers, born on September 14, 1958, is a Canadian politician from Leduc, Alberta. He has held important roles in his community. He served on the Leduc city council, then as mayor of Leduc. Later, he became a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Leduc-Beaumont area. He is a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta.
Early Life and Education
George Rogers was born in Jamaica. He moved to Canada in 1975. He is a father of three children. He has also been a very active volunteer in his community.
Rogers finished Leduc Senior High School in 1977. He then studied at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). In 1980, he earned a diploma in business administration, focusing on accounting. Later, in 1988, he received a certificate in local government studies from the University of Alberta.
After finishing his studies, Rogers worked in the oil industry. He held various accounting jobs, eventually becoming an assistant controller.
Public Service Career
In 1986, George Rogers started working for the city of Leduc as an assistant treasurer. After three years, he moved to Redcliff, Alberta. There, he worked as a municipal administrator. This role included being a secretary-treasurer and an assistant town manager.
In 1992, he returned to Leduc. He began a career in real estate sales. That same year, he decided to run for a seat on the Leduc city council. He was elected in 1992 and again in 1995.
In October 1998, Rogers was elected as the mayor of Leduc. He was re-elected for a second term in October 2001.
During his time as mayor, he also served on the board of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association from 1993 to 2003. He was even the president of this association from 2001 to 2003. He also represented Alberta on the board of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. For his hard work, Alberta Venture Magazine named him one of Alberta's 50 Most Influential People in 2003.
Rogers was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Leduc-Beaumont-Devon on November 22, 2004. He was re-elected in 2008 and again in 2012. On December 15, 2006, he was appointed to the Treasury Board. This board helps manage the government's money.
Besides being an MLA, he also served as Deputy Speaker from 2012 to 2015. He chaired various committees, like the Cabinet Policy Committee on Public Health and Safety. He also helped with important search committees, such as those for the Chief Electoral Officer and the Ethics Commissioner.
In the 2015 Alberta general election, George Rogers was not re-elected. He was defeated by Shaye Anderson.
