About George Salis-Schwabe
Early Life and Education
George Salis-Schwabe was the son of Salis Schwabe and Julie Schwabe. His father was a successful cotton printer who came from Germany. His mother, Julie, was a well-known educator. His parents had many famous friends.
George went to school at University College School in London. He also studied at London University.
Military Career
George Salis-Schwabe joined the army in 1863. He became a Brigade Major of Cavalry. He served in this role at the Curragh and Aldershot from 1873 to 1877.
In 1879, he fought in the Anglo-Zulu War. He was recognized for his bravery and received a medal. By 1881, he became a Lieutenant-Colonel. He commanded the 16th The Queen's Lancers.
Later in his life, George Salis-Schwabe became a Major-General in 1898. He served as the Lieutenant Governor of the Chelsea Royal Hospital until 1905. He was also honored with the Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) award in 1902. King Edward VII presented him with this award.
Business and Politics
Besides his army career, George Salis-Schwabe was also a partner in a business. His company, Salis Schwabe & Co, printed calico fabric. They had offices in Rhodes and Manchester.
In 1885, George Salis-Schwabe was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented the Middleton area of Lancashire. He was part of the Liberal Party.
However, the Liberal Party later split over a disagreement about Home Rule for Ireland. George Salis-Schwabe then joined a new group called the Liberal Unionist Party. He did not run for election again in 1886.
George Salis-Schwabe passed away on July 13, 1907, when he was 63 years old.
Family Life
In 1870, George Salis-Schwabe married Mary Jaqueline James. Her father was Sir William Milbourne James, a well-known judge.
George and Mary had five children:

- Sir Walter George Salis Schwabe (born 1873), who became a King's Counsel and a Chief Justice in India
- Edgar William Salis Schwabe (born 1875)
- Gladys Mary Salis Schwabe (born 1878)

Sadly, Gladys and her husband, Paul Crompton, along with their six children, died when the RMS Lusitania sank on May 7, 1915.
