George Seton, 5th Lord Seton facts for kids
George Seton III, 5th Lord Seton was an important Scottish nobleman who lived a long time ago. He was also known as the 3rd Lord Seton named George. He became the Lord Seton after his father passed away in 1508.
George Seton III was Lord for only a short time. During this period, he worked on improving Seton Palace, which was his family's main home in a place called East Lothian. He also gave more money and support to Seton Collegiate Church. This church was very old and had been started by his family many years before.
Lord Seton was a close friend of King James IV of Scotland. In 1513, he joined the King on a trip into England. This journey led to a very sad event called the Battle of Flodden. On September 9, King James and Lord Seton were among many thousands of Scottish people who died in this battle. Lord Seton's body was brought back to Scotland. He was buried at Seton Church, right next to his father.
Lady Janet Hepburn: His Family and Legacy
Before January 1507, George Seton married Lady Janet Hepburn. She was the daughter of Patrick Hepburn, 1st Earl of Bothwell. George and Janet had one son who survived and later became the next Lord Seton, named George Seton, 6th Lord Seton. They also had a daughter named Mariota (or Marion). Mariota married three times during her life.
Lady Janet's Life After Flodden
After the Battle of Flodden, Lady Janet Seton became a widow. She lived for another 45 years. She was a very religious woman and continued to give gifts to Seton Church. She even had new parts added to the church building.
When her son, the young Lord Seton, grew up and was old enough to take over, Lady Janet decided to retire. She moved to the Convent of Saint Catherine of Siena in Edinburgh. This convent was founded in 1517 with special permission from Pope Leo X. Lady Janet also gave money and support to this convent. She passed away there in 1558 and was buried next to her husband at Seton Church.
