His Family and Early Life

George Stoughton came from a family that was also involved in politics. His father was Lawrence Stoughton, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone elected to represent people in the country's main law-making group, called the Parliament. George's mother was Rose Ive. Her stepfather, William Hammond, was also an MP. George also had a brother named Nicholas Stoughton, who followed in their father's footsteps and became an MP too.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1614, George Stoughton was chosen by people to represent them in the Parliament of England. He was elected for two different areas: Guildford and Newtown, Isle of Wight. When someone is elected for more than one place, they have to choose which one they want to represent. George decided to sit for Guildford. This meant he would speak for the people of Guildford in Parliament.
