Sir George Taylor (born February 15, 1904, in Edinburgh – died November 13, 1993, in Dunbar) was an important Scottish botanist. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants. He spent much of his life working with plants and helping to manage famous gardens.
Life and Discoveries
George Taylor was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was a painter and decorator. George went to Boroughmuir High School and later to George Heriot's School.
He studied Biology at Edinburgh University and finished his first degree in 1926. He loved exploring and went on trips to study plants in places like Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and South Africa in 1927 and 1928. He then earned a higher degree in 1928.
Right after his studies, he started working at the British Museum in London. This museum has huge collections of plants, animals, and historical items. In 1934, he led an expedition for the museum to the Rwenzori Mountains in East Africa, where he collected many plant samples. In 1938, he also traveled to Bhutan with other explorers, Frank Ludlow and George Sherriff, to find more plants.
George Taylor worked at the British Museum for many years. He became the Deputy Keeper of Botany in 1945 and then the Keeper of Botany in 1950. This meant he was in charge of the museum's plant collections.
In 1956, he became the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. This is one of the most famous botanical gardens in the world, located near London. He worked there until 1971. During his time at Kew, he also helped create the Queen's Garden at Kew Palace between 1965 and 1969.
He was recognized for his important work. In 1962, Queen Elizabeth II made him a knight, so he became "Sir George Taylor." In 1968, he was also chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, which is a very high honor for scientists.
After leaving Kew in 1971, he moved back to Scotland. He worked at the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust near Dunbar, where he helped redesign and replant a large garden. He retired in 1989 and passed away in 1993.
