George Vaughan Hart (born June 5, 1841 – died December 13, 1912) was an important academic from Ireland. He was a King's Counsel, which means he was a very experienced lawyer. From 1890 to 1909, he worked as a professor at Trinity College Dublin. His job was to teach about old English and feudal laws.

Life and Career

George Vaughan Hart was born in Dublin, Ireland. His father, Sir Andrew S. Hart, was also a well-known person at Trinity College Dublin. George went to school at St Columba's College, Dublin and then studied at Trinity College Dublin. He had a brother named Henry Chichester Hart, who became an explorer and botanist.

In 1865, George became a lawyer in Ireland. He taught law about personal property from 1880 to 1886. Later, in 1890, he became the Chief Examiner of Titles in Dublin. This was a big job related to land ownership. His most important role was being a professor of law at Trinity College Dublin for almost 20 years.

Outside of his work, George Vaughan Hart loved gardening. He owned a house and a beautiful garden called Woodside in Howth, County Dublin.

Family Life

On September 12, 1873, George Vaughan Hart married Mary Elizabeth Hone. They had seven children together:

  • Ethel Vaughan Hart (1875-1964): She married Sir Anthony Babington in 1907. They had three children: Mary, Emerson, and Ruth.
  • George Vaughan Hart (1877-1928): He married Maud Cullen. They had six children: George, Frances, Andrew, John, Edward, and Ann. Sadly, George Vaughan Hart and two of his sons, Andrew and John, died in a swimming accident in County Donegal in 1928.
  • Norah Searle Hart (1879-1965): She married Mr. Roberts. They did not have any children.
  • Hilda Chichester Hart (1882-1967): She married Geoffrey Surtees Phillpotts. They had five children: Dorothy, James, Mary Elizabeth, George, and Brian.
  • Tristram Beresford Hart (1884-1963): He married Vivian Parker. They did not have any children.
  • William Hume Hart (1885-1976): He became a medical doctor. He married Margot Miller, and they did not have any children.
  • Ruth Hart (1866-1977): She married Andrew Jameson. They did not have any children together, but Andrew Jameson had children from a previous marriage.
