George Wassouf (Arabic: جورج وسوف; born December 23, 1961) is a famous Syrian singer. He has been singing for over 40 years. During this time, he has released more than 30 albums.
George Wassouf has a huge number of fans all over the Arab world. People call him Sultan El-Tarab, which means The Sultan of Music. He is one of the most successful Arab singers ever. He has sold more than 60 million records around the world.
Early Life and Music Journey
George Wassouf was born in Kafroun, Syria. His family was Greek Orthodox Christian. He started singing when he was only 10 years old in his hometown.
When he was 12, a manager named George Yazbeck discovered him. This happened at a wedding party where George Wassouf was performing. At 16, a journalist gave him the nickname Sultan El-Tarab. This was after his popular song "el-Hawa Sultan."
He became very famous after appearing on a Lebanese TV show called Studio El Fan in 1980. He was 19 years old then. George Wassouf also has citizenship in Lebanon.
George Wassouf chose not to make many music videos for his songs. He said he felt most like himself when singing live on stage. He felt that acting in videos was not for him.
Family Life
George Wassouf married his first wife, Shalimar, when he was 21. They had three sons: Wadih, Hatem, and George Jr. They were married for 28 years before they separated in 2009.
Sadly, their oldest son, Wadih, passed away in January 2023. This happened due to health problems after a surgery.
In 2014, George Wassouf married Nada Zeidan. She was a rally champion from Qatar. They later divorced in 2016. They had a daughter named Oyoon, who was born in October 2015.
During the Syrian Civil War, George Wassouf showed strong support for the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
