Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The George Waterston Memorial Centre and Museum is a special local museum located on Fair Isle in Scotland. It's a place where you can learn all about the island's interesting history, from ancient times right up to today.

About George Waterston

The museum is named after a very important person called George Waterston (1911–1980). He was a much-loved figure who had a huge positive impact on Fair Isle. George was the Scottish Director for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), which is a group that works to protect birds.

After World War II, George Waterston bought Fair Isle. In 1948, he helped start the Bird Observatory there. This was a big help for the island's economy, giving it a much-needed boost. Later, in 1955, the National Trust for Scotland took over as the island's owner. They continued George's work, helping islanders stay and making the community stronger.
