Sir George Wentworth was born in 1609. His father was Sir William Wentworth, 1st Baronet, who lived at Wentworth Woodhouse. His mother was Anne Atkins.

Sir George had a very famous older brother, Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford. Thomas was an important advisor to King Charles I.

His Time in Politics

In November 1640, Sir George Wentworth was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Pontefract. This meant he represented the people of Pontefract in the English Parliament. This Parliament was known as the Long Parliament.

However, his time in Parliament ended in January 1644. He was removed because he supported King Charles I during the English Civil War.

Role in the English Civil War

The English Civil War was a big conflict in England. It was fought between those who supported King Charles I (the Royalists) and those who supported Parliament. Sir George Wentworth was a strong supporter of the King.

He even became a general for the King's forces in Ireland. This shows he played an active part in the war.

Family and Connections

Sir George Wentworth married a woman from Ireland. Her father was Sir Francis Ruish. Through this marriage, Sir George gained control of a large estate called Sarre in Kent, England.
