George William de Carteret (born in 1869 in St Peter, Jersey, and passed away on September 4, 1940) was a talented writer and journalist from Jersey. He wrote in the Norman language, which is a special old French language spoken in the Channel Islands.

Even though he worked as a farmer in St Peter, George William de Carteret loved to write. Every Saturday, he wrote many articles for a newspaper called Les Chroniques de Jersey. He used a special writing name, or nom de plume, which was Le Caouain. This means "The Owl" in Norman language!

The Owl's Stories

George William de Carteret created a fun character named Le Caouain for his articles. This character was an owl who supposedly lived with his wife, Marie Hibou (which means "Mary Owl"), in the attic of the newspaper's printing shop.

The stories said that Le Caouain would fly around the different town halls, reporting on what was happening in the local village governments. This was a clever way for George William de Carteret to write about local politics in a fun and interesting way for his readers.

Other Writings and Roles

Besides writing as Le Caouain, George William de Carteret also used another pen name: G.W. de C.. Most of his writings were in prose, which means regular written stories and articles. However, he also wrote some poems for the Jersey Eisteddfod, which is a festival where people share their talents in music, poetry, and drama. He even wrote short plays for people to perform!

George William de Carteret was also very involved in his community. He served as the secretary for the Jersey Farmers Union, helping out local farmers.
