George Wayne Wright (born March 3, 1947) is a former American football player. He played as a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL). A defensive tackle is a player who tries to stop the other team from running with the ball. George played for the Baltimore Colts and the Cleveland Browns. He was chosen by the Colts in the 1969 NFL draft. He also helped the Colts win Super Bowl V.

George Wright's Early Life and College Football

George Wayne Wright was born in Houston, Texas, on March 3, 1947. He went to C.E. King High School in Houston.

Playing for Sam Houston State

From 1965 to 1968, George played college football for the Sam Houston State Bearkats. He was a very good player. In 1967 and 1968, he was named All-Southland Conference. This means he was one of the best players in his college football conference. In 1968, he also earned NAIA All-America honors. This means he was recognized as one of the best college players in the entire country. In 1994, Sam Houston State added him to their athletic Hall of Honor. This is a special award for great athletes from the school.

George Wright's Professional Football Career

The Baltimore Colts picked George Wright in the 1969 NFL draft. He was the 210th player chosen overall. He signed with the Colts on June 3. He spent some time on the team's practice squad in 1969. A practice squad is a group of players who train with the team but are not on the main roster.

Playing for the Baltimore Colts

George re-signed with the Colts after the 1969 season. In 1970, he played in two regular season games for the Colts. He also played in two playoff games that year. On January 17, 1971, the Colts won Super Bowl V by beating the Dallas Cowboys. This was a huge championship win for the team. In 1971, George played in ten regular season games and one playoff game.

Moving to Other NFL Teams

On January 31, 1972, George was traded to the San Diego Chargers. Being traded means a player moves to a new team in exchange for other players or draft picks. Later that year, on September 5, 1972, he was traded again. This time, he went to the Cleveland Browns. He played in four games for the Browns during the 1972 season. George was released by the Browns on August 10, 1973. This means he was no longer on their team.
