George Wright (born 1847 – died 15 May 1913) was an Irish lawyer and a respected judge. He played an important role in the legal system of Ireland during his time.

George Wright: A Life in Law

George Wright was born in 1847 in a town called Clonakilty in County Cork, Ireland. His father, Thomas Wright, and his brothers were also lawyers, known as solicitors, in Clonakilty. One of his brothers, H.T. Wright, even held a special legal job called the Clerk of the Peace for Cork.

In 1881, George Wright married Mary Barrington. His family owned a large house in Clonakilty called Fernhill House, which is now a hotel.

Becoming a Lawyer and Judge

George Wright began his legal career in 1871 when he was "called to the Bar." This means he officially became a barrister, a type of lawyer who argues cases in higher courts. Later, in 1884, he "took silk," which is a special honor given to very experienced barristers, allowing them to take on more important cases.

What is a Solicitor-General?

From January 1900 to October 1901, George Wright served as the Solicitor-General for Ireland. This was a very important job in the government. The Solicitor-General is one of the main legal advisors to the government and helps to represent the government in legal matters. He served in the Unionist government, which was led by Lord Salisbury.

Serving as a High Court Judge

In 1903, George Wright was appointed to the Queen's Bench Division of the Irish High Court. This meant he became a judge in one of the highest courts in Ireland. He served as a judge until his death in 1913.

George Wright was very well-liked by his fellow lawyers and judges. He was also highly respected for his legal skills and knowledge. One of his colleagues once joked that he was "on the borderline of genius but never trespasses." People even made a popular verse about him that said, "Judge Wright, who's never wrong!"

Legacy and Later Life

George Wright passed away on 15 May 1913. He is remembered as a dedicated and respected figure in the Irish legal system.
