George Yule (businessman) facts for kids
George Yule (born April 17, 1829, died March 26, 1892) was an important Scottish businessman. He worked in both England and India. He made history by becoming the fourth President of the Indian National Congress in 1888. This was a big deal because he was the first non-Indian person to lead this important political group. He also started his own company, George Yule & Co. in London, and led another major company, Andrew Yule & Co., in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. He held important positions like Sheriff of Calcutta and President of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce.
Building a Business Career
Around 1855, George Yule and his brother Andrew Yule moved to Manchester, England. In 1858, they started a business together, setting up a warehouse. A warehouse is a large building where goods are stored before being sold or moved. Their business grew very well. This success allowed George Yule to live in nice places like Platt Hall in Manchester and a home near the Bank of England in London.
His brother, Andrew, moved to India. Later, in 1875, George Yule joined Andrew in India. Their nephew, David Yule, also came along. George Yule did not have any children, so he became the main leader of the family's many businesses. Over time, the family's wealth was brought together when Andrew's daughter, Annie, married her cousin David.
George Yule was buried at Dunnottar kirkyard in Scotland.
Leading the Indian National Congress
George Yule is best known for his role in the Indian National Congress. This was a major political organization in India. It was formed to give Indians a greater say in their own government during British rule. In 1888, George Yule was chosen to be the President of this important group. This happened at a meeting in a city called Allahabad. His election was significant because he was the first person who was not Indian to hold this top position. This showed that the Congress was open to leaders from different backgrounds who supported its goals.
