Georgene Faulkner facts for kids
Georgene Faulkner (born 1873, died 1958) was a famous American author. She wrote many books for children. She was also a wonderful storyteller. People often called her "the Story Lady." She lived and worked in the early 1900s.
Early Life and Storytelling
Georgene Faulkner was born in Chicago, Illinois. She studied at the School of Education at the University of Chicago. This school was a leader in new ideas about education.
In 1909, her sister Elizabeth Faulkner opened a school. It was called the Faulkner School for Girls. Georgene was in charge of the kindergarten class there. She was very good at telling stories. She even dressed up as Mrs. Santa Claus to tell Christmas stories to kids.
Georgene also told stories to grown-ups. During World War I, she traveled to Europe. She entertained American soldiers with her stories.
The Story Lady on Air
In 1922, Georgene Faulkner started broadcasting on the radio. She had shows on Chicago radio stations like WMAQ and WGN. Her radio programs were called "The Story Lady" and "Air Castle." She also wrote articles for children in the Chicago Tribune newspaper.
Her Books and Later Work
Over 40 years, Georgene Faulkner wrote and edited many children's books. Some of her books had pictures drawn by Frederick Richardson.
Later in her career, she wrote about important social issues. She wrote about racial prejudice, which means unfair treatment based on race. She wrote two books on this topic with John Becker: Melindy's Medal (1945) and Melindy's Happy Summer (1949). These books helped teach children about fairness and understanding.
