Georges-Casimir Dessaulles (born September 29, 1827 – died April 19, 1930) was an important Canadian. He was a businessman and a politician. He is best known for being a Senator for a very long time.
Dessaulles was one of the oldest politicians ever to serve. He was appointed to the Senate of Canada in 1907. At that time, he was already 80 years old! He served for 23 years, until he passed away at the age of 102.
Early Life and Education
Georges-Casimir Dessaulles was born in 1827. His birthplace was Saint-Hyacinthe, which was then called Lower Canada. His father was Jean Dessaulles. He was also the nephew of a famous politician, Louis-Joseph Papineau.
Dessaulles went to college at Georgetown University. He finished his studies there in 1848.
A Career in Public Service
Before becoming a senator, Dessaulles had a busy career. He was the president of the Bank of Saint-Hyacinthe. He also served as the mayor of his hometown, Saint-Hyacinthe.
From 1897 to 1900, he was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. This is like being a provincial politician. He was chosen for this role at the last minute. This happened after the previous candidate, who was his son-in-law, passed away.
Life in the Senate
In 1907, Georges-Casimir Dessaulles became a Senator for Quebec. This is a very high political position in Canada. He served in the Senate for 23 years. He was known for his long service.
His 100th birthday was a special event in the Senate. He was only the second senator ever to reach 100 years old while serving. When he died in 1930, Dessaulles was the oldest politician still serving anywhere in the world. No one has broken this record since then.
Dessaulles was also famous for hardly ever speaking in the Senate. He only gave two speeches during his entire time there. One time, he spoke to say that his appointment was fair. The second time, he thanked his fellow senators for a portrait they gave him on his 100th birthday.
Family Life
Georges-Casimir Dessaulles was married twice. In 1857, he married Émilie-Emma. After she passed away, he married Louise-Frances Leman in 1869.
His daughter, Henriette Dessaulles, became a well-known writer and journalist.
