The Georgia Plain Baptist Church is a really old and special church located in Georgia, Vermont. It was built in 1877, but the church group (called a congregation) started way back in 1793! This church is a great example of a building style called Gothic Victorian architecture. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. This list helps protect important historical places in the United States.

About the Church Building

The Georgia Plain Baptist Church is found in a small, quiet village called Georgia Plains. It's a one-story building made from red bricks. You can see special sand-colored bricks used for decoration.

Outside the Church

The church has a very steep roof and a front that looks like it's made of three parts. On the right side, there's a tall tower. This tower has a bell section (called a belfry) and a pointy roof (a steeple) covered in slate.

The main door is at the bottom of this tower. It's shaped like a tall, pointed arch, which is common in Gothic style. Above the door, there's a small, narrow window. The middle part of the church's front has a big, beautiful stained-glass window, also shaped like a Gothic arch.

Inside the Church

When you go inside, you can still see many of the original parts of the church. There's fancy carved wood, a special metal ceiling, and even the old light fixtures. It's like stepping back in time!

A Look at Church History

The Baptist church group in Georgia started in 1793. This made them the second religious group in the town. For many years, they met in Georgia's town hall.

Building the Church

In 1848, they built their very first church building on this spot. Sadly, that church burned down in 1876. But the community worked together, and the new church, the one you see today, was finished just one year later in 1877.

Important People in History

The Georgia Plain Baptist Church is famous for something very special. In 1919, they ordained Reverend Grace Brooks. She was the first woman to become a pastor of any church in the entire state of Vermont!

Another very important person was Reverend Alvah Sabin. He was born in Georgia and served as the church's pastor for 53 years! That's a very long time! He was also a United States Representative, meaning he helped make laws for the country.
