Early Life and Family
Georgiana Keate was likely born in 1771, though the exact year is not certain. Her father was George Keate, a writer, and her mother was Jane Catharine Hudson. Her uncle was Sir Charles Grave Hudson.
Her Art and Famous Connections
Georgiana showed her artistic skills from a young age. She created paintings that captured important moments and people of her time.
Painting a Balloon Flight
In 1785, Georgiana painted a picture called "Mr Biggin and Mrs Sage ascending from St Georges Fields in Lunardis Balloon 29 June 1785". This artwork shows a real hot-air balloon flight that happened that year. Today, this painting is kept safe by the Royal Astronomical Society.
The Story of Prince Lee Boo
Georgiana also met Prince Lee Boo, who came from the Pelew Islands (now known as Palau). Sadly, Prince Lee Boo died from smallpox. Georgiana's father decided to write a book about the prince's life. Fifteen months after the prince's death, Georgiana painted his portrait. This painting was later used to create an engraving by Henry Kingsbury, which is now in the National Portrait Gallery.
Georgiana was a recognized artist. In 1791, she displayed four of her paintings at the Society of Artists exhibition.
Family and Later Life
On June 9, 1796, Georgiana married John Henderson. Her husband was also interested in art, even though he wasn't a professional painter. He was a "patron" of art, which means he supported and helped artists like Thomas Girtin and J. M. W. Turner.
Georgiana and John had five children together. Two of their sons became famous artists:
- Charles Cooper Henderson was known for painting coaches.
- John Henderson became a collector who gathered many important private art collections.
They also had three daughters.
Portraits of Georgiana
Georgiana was painted by several well-known artists. Angelica Kauffman, a famous painter, created a portrait of Georgiana when she was a young girl. Kauffman was very interested in Georgiana's artistic abilities.
Another famous painter, John Russell, also painted Georgiana in 1795. This portrait is shown in the infobox at the top of this page.
Later Years and Legacy
Georgiana Henderson passed away on January 8, 1850. She was buried in her husband's grave at Kensal Green Cemetery. Her work and her family's artistic legacy continue to be remembered.
