Early Life and Education
Geraldine Keams was born in Flagstaff, Arizona, on August 19, 1951. She grew up on the Navajo reservation. A reservation is a special area of land set aside for Native American tribes. After living there, she went to the University of Arizona. At the university, she studied drama and film. This helped her learn about acting and making movies.
Starting Her Acting Career
After college, Geraldine moved to New York City. She wanted to work in theater there. In New York, she joined the Native American Theater Ensemble. This group was led by Hanay Geiogamah. Geraldine wrote and performed with them.
She helped create a play called Na Haaz Zan in 1972. This play was based on a Navajo creation story. She also acted in another play called Body Indian. The theater group took both plays on tour in 1972 and 1973. They performed in many places, including universities and cultural centers.
Film and Television Roles
Geraldine Keams made her first movie appearance in 1976. She played a character named Little Moonlight in the western film The Outlaw Josey Wales. This movie was directed by Clint Eastwood.
More recently, in 2021, she had a regular role in the TV show Rutherford Falls. This show is about the relationships between a fictional Native American tribe and a nearby town. The show's creator, Sierra Teller Ornelas, called Geraldine "Navajo royalty." She said she was very impressed when Geraldine came to the set. Geraldine also appeared in the TV series Reservation Dogs in 2021.
