What are Geraniales?
Geraniales are a small order of plants. Most plants in this group are herbaceous. This means they have soft stems, not woody ones like trees. However, some Geraniales can also be shrubs or small trees.
Rosids and Dicotyledons
Geraniales are part of the rosids. Rosids are a very large group of flowering plants. They are also dicotyledons. Dicotyledons are plants whose seeds have two "seed leaves" or cotyledons. This is different from monocotyledons, which have only one.
Main Families of Geraniales
This plant order includes a few different families. The largest and most well-known is the Geraniaceae family.
The Geraniaceae Family
The Geraniaceae family is the biggest group within the Geraniales order. It has more than 800 different kinds of plants! Many popular garden flowers come from this family.
One famous plant from this family is the Pelargonium. People often call Pelargonium plants "geraniums." This can be a bit confusing! The true Geranium is a different, but related, plant. Both are beautiful and often grown for their colorful flowers.
Other Families
Besides Geraniaceae, the Geraniales order has a few other smaller families. These families have fewer species, with less than 40 types of plants in total.
