Rosid facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The rosids are a very large group of flowering plants. They include about 70,000 different kinds of plants. This is more than a quarter (one-fourth) of all the flowering plants on Earth!

The rosids are divided into 17 main groups called orders. These orders contain about 140 smaller groups called families. Some well-known plants in this group include lemons, which are known for their bitter, yellow fruit. The rosids, along with another big group called the asterids, are the largest groups within the eudicots. Eudicots are a major type of flowering plant.

What Are Rosids?

Rosids are a huge and important group of flowering plants. They are known for their wide variety of shapes, sizes, and habitats. You can find rosids all over the world, from forests to deserts.

How Many Rosids Are There?

There are around 70,000 different species of rosids. This makes them one of the biggest groups of plants. Imagine, more than one out of every four flowering plants you see belongs to the rosid group!

Where Do Rosids Fit In?

In the world of plants, rosids are part of the eudicots. Eudicots are a large group of flowering plants that have two seed leaves when they first sprout. The rosids and the asterids are the two biggest families within the eudicots.

When Did Rosids First Appear?

Scientists have found fossils of rosids from a long time ago. These fossils date back to the Cretaceous period. This was the time when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth!

Experts believe that rosids first appeared between 125 and 99.6 million years ago. This was during the Aptian or Albian stages of the Cretaceous period.

Different Ways to Define Rosids

Sometimes, scientists have slightly different ways of defining the rosid group. Some experts include a plant order called Saxifragales within the rosids. However, other scientists prefer to keep Saxifragales separate. This shows how scientists sometimes have different ideas about how to group living things.
