Education and Teaching Career
Gerard Casey studied at many famous universities. He earned degrees in law from the University of London and University College Dublin (UCD). He also studied philosophy at University College Cork, the University of Notre Dame in the United States, and the National University of Ireland.
His teaching career began in the United States. He was an Assistant Professor at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., from 1983 to 1986. After that, he returned to Ireland and joined the School of Philosophy at UCD. He even led the department as its Head from 2001 to 2006. He taught at UCD for almost 30 years before retiring in 2015.
Ideas and Public Life
Casey is interested in big questions about how society should work. His main interests are in political philosophy (the study of government and rights), philosophy of law (the study of how laws are made and what they mean), and the philosophy of religion.
Political Views
In the 1990s, Casey was involved in Irish politics. He led a political group called the Christian Solidarity Party. Over time, his views changed. He now describes himself as a libertarian. Libertarians believe that people should have the most freedom possible with very little government control.
He also calls his views (philosophically) anarchistic. This means he believes that society could work best without a state or government at all. He is a member of groups that support free speech and academic freedom.
Media Appearances
Casey has appeared on TV and radio in Ireland and the UK. He has shared his opinions on current events and social topics. In 2006, he was on a popular Irish TV program, The Late Late Show, to discuss the book The God Delusion with its author, Richard Dawkins.
