Gerd Zewe, born on June 13, 1950, is a former German football player and manager. He played mostly as a midfielder or defender.

Gerd started playing football as a young boy for SV Stennweiler. Later, he played as an amateur for Borussia Neunkirchen. His only professional club was Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Playing for Fortuna Düsseldorf

Gerd Zewe spent 15 years playing for Fortuna Düsseldorf. He joined the team in 1972 and stayed until 1987. He started as a midfielder but later became a sweeper. A sweeper is a defender who "sweeps up" any loose balls or attacking players who get past the main defenders.

Zewe played in 440 matches in the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top football league. He scored 42 goals during his time there. This number of matches is still a record for Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga.

Cup Success

Gerd Zewe and his team at Fortuna Düsseldorf were very successful in the DFB-Pokal. This is a major German cup competition. They reached the final three years in a row, from 1978 to 1980.

They won the trophy twice, in 1979 and 1980. In 1979, they also reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup. This was a big European competition. They played against FC Barcelona in Basel, Switzerland. Unfortunately, they lost the match after extra time.

In 1987, after 15 years with Fortuna Düsseldorf, Gerd Zewe left the club. He then played for Kickers Würzburg as an amateur player before ending his career.

Playing for West Germany

Gerd Zewe also played for the West Germany national football team. He played in four matches for his country.

He was even part of the West German squad for the 1978 FIFA World Cup. He was an unused substitute, meaning he was ready to play but did not get onto the field.

His first match for West Germany was on October 11, 1978. They won 4-3 against Czechoslovakia. His last match was a goalless draw against Malta in 1979. This was a qualifying match for the 1980 UEFA European Championship.
