The German-American Heritage Museum of the USA, also known as GAHM, is a special place in Washington D.C., the capital city of the United States of America. You can find it in a building called Hockemeyer Hall. This museum is supported by different groups from both Germany and America. Its main goal is to show the 400-year history of Germans living in America, from the early 1600s until today.
A Look Back: The Museum's Story
Hockemeyer Hall: A Special Building
John Hockemeyer was a German man who moved to the United States. After the Civil War, he became a successful businessman. He was also an important leader in the German community of Washington D.C..
In 1888, John Hockemeyer built a beautiful Victorian-style house. This house became a popular spot for German-American businesses. It was also a meeting place for many German clubs and groups. John Hockemeyer was a member of some of these groups himself. In October 2008, the German-American Heritage Foundation of the USA bought this building. They wanted to turn it into the museum we see today.
