Germantown is a small, unincorporated community located in O'Brien County, Iowa, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, the county government helps manage things for the people living there.

A Look Back: Germantown's History

Germantown was officially planned out on June 10, 1901. This process, called "platting," is like drawing a map for a new neighborhood, showing where streets and building lots will go. Edward D. Beerman was the person who did this planning.

In 1902, Germantown was a small place with 53 people living there. By 1925, its population had grown slightly to 55 residents.

Schools in Germantown

In the 1910s, Germantown had a Christian school. This school was called St. John Lutheran School and taught students from kindergarten through 8th grade. Later, it joined with Zion Lutheran School in Paullina. Together, they formed a new school called Zion - St. John Lutheran School.

Today, the South O'Brien Community School District operates schools that serve the community of Germantown. This school district was created on July 1, 1993. It was formed when three smaller school districts — Paullina, Primghar, and Sutherland — combined into one larger district.
