Gerolsteiner Brunnen GmbH & Co. KG, usually just called Gerolsteiner, is a big German company that sells mineral water. It's located in a town called Gerolstein in the Eifel mountains. The company is famous for its Gerolsteiner Sprudel brand, which is a sparkling mineral water bottled directly from a natural source. Gerolsteiner also used to be the main sponsor of a cycling team called Team Gerolsteiner.

The Story of Gerolsteiner Water

How Gerolsteiner Started

On January 1, 1888, a man named Wilhelm Castendyck started the Gerolsteiner Sprudel company. He was a mine manager. The company was founded in Gerolstein, Germany.

In the same year, the company drilled its first water well. By November, the water from this well became very popular. People liked it because it had a lot of natural carbonic acid, which makes it fizzy.

Early Trademarks and Exports

In 1889, Gerolsteiner created its special star-and-lion symbol. This symbol became the company's official trademark.

By 1895, Gerolsteiner water was being sent to other countries. It was even exported all the way to Australia.

Gerolsteiner Around the World

The first time Gerolsteiner water was sent to the United States was in 1890. It mostly went to Chicago. Many German people had moved to Chicago, so the water was popular there.

Shipments to the U.S. stopped during World War I. But they started again in 1928.

Rebuilding After Difficult Times

The Gerolsteiner factory was badly damaged during a bombing raid in December 1944. It was a difficult time for the company.

However, they worked hard to rebuild. By 1948, the factory building and its equipment were fully repaired. The water filling machines were also fixed.

New Products and Changes

In 1986, Gerolsteiner introduced a new type of water. This water had less carbonic acid. This was done to match what people liked to drink at the time.

In 1998, the company started using PET plastic bottles. These were Germany's first reusable plastic bottles for mineral water. This change caused some discussion. Many people in Germany were used to glass bottles that could be returned and reused.

Who Owns Gerolsteiner Today?

As of 2022, the main owner of Gerolsteiner Brunnen is a company called Bitburger Holding [de].
