Gertrud Dahlgren (1931–2009) was an important Swedish scientist who studied plants. She was born in a place called Klippan in Scania, Sweden. After finishing high school, she went to the University of Lund for her advanced studies. There, she earned her Master of Science degree in chemistry and biology.

Gertrud was married to another botanist named Rolf Dahlgren. They had three children: Elisabet, Karin, and Anders. Gertrud Dahlgren passed away in February 2009 when she was 78 years old.

Her Life and Studies

At the University of Lund, Gertrud Dahlgren focused on a special field called systematic botany. This field is about classifying and understanding how different plants are related to each other.

In the mid-1950s, a new area of study called biosystematics began. This became Gertrud Dahlgren's main focus. Biosystematics looks at how plants are related by studying their genes, how they grow, and where they live. Her work in this area became well-known around the world.

Her Research and Discoveries

In 1967, Gertrud earned her Ph.D. (a very high university degree) for her research on a group of plants called Sanguisorba. She especially studied two types of these plants found in Sweden: S. officinalis and S. minor.

After getting her Ph.D., she became an Associate Professor at Lund University. She continued her work in biosystematics, showing a special interest in plants like Ranunculus (buttercups) and Erodium. She also helped edit a textbook about systematic botany, which was later translated into German.

Leading the Department

In 1979, Gertrud Dahlgren was chosen to lead the department of Systematic Botany at Lund University. She held this important position until 1987. After her husband passed away, she decided to continue his work on the classification of flowering plants. This field is called angiosperm taxonomy.

In 1992, she was recognized for her contributions and was elected to the Kungliga Fysiografiska Sällskapet i Lund, which is a respected scientific society in Sweden.
