Gervase Pierrepont, 1st Baron Pierrepont (born 1649 – died May 22, 1715), was an important English politician. He was known for his work in Parliament and for becoming a Baron.

Early Life and Family

Gervase Pierrepont was born in 1649. He was the younger son of William Pierrepont. His grandfather was Robert Pierrepont, 1st Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull, a very important noble.

His mother was Elizabeth, who was the daughter of Sir Thomas Harries, 1st Baronet. The Harries family lived at Tong Castle in Shropshire. Gervase also had several well-known nephews. These included Robert Pierrepont, 3rd Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull and Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull.

Political Career

Gervase Pierrepont began his political journey in 1698. He was elected to Parliament to represent the area of Appleby. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Appleby until 1705.

Becoming a Baron

In 1702, Gervase Pierrepont received a special honor. He was made a Baron Pierrepont in the Peerage of Ireland. This meant he became a noble, but it was a special kind of nobility. Being a Baron in the Peerage of Ireland allowed him to keep his seat in the House of Commons. The House of Commons is where elected representatives work.

Later, in 1714, he received an even higher honor. He was made Baron Pierrepont again, but this time in the Peerage of Great Britain. This new title was linked to Hanslape in Buckinghamshire. This second title was different. It meant he automatically gained a seat in the House of Lords. The House of Lords is the upper house of Parliament, where many nobles serve.

Marriage and Death

Lord Pierrepont married Lucy Pelham in 1680. She was the daughter of Sir John Pelham, 3rd Baronet.

Gervase Pierrepont passed away in May 1715. When he died, his titles as Baron became extinct. This means there was no one to inherit them. Lady Pierrepont, his wife, died a few years later in July 1721.
