Gheba tribe facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Gheba are a group of people, or a tribe, who mainly live in the Punjab region of Pakistan. You can find most of them in the Fateh Jang Tehsil area of Attock District. Many people consider the Ghebas to be part of the Rajput community. However, some Gheba families believe they are actually Mughals from the Barlas group, as noted in a report from 1901.

Where the Ghebas Came From

There are different ideas about where the Gheba people originally came from. Most experts, like historians and early British officials in India, believe the Ghebas are related to groups like the Jodhra tribe and Alpial. They think the Ghebas have Hindu roots, likely from the Rajput community.

Long ago, the Ghebas lived in a much wider area. This included parts of both Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which are now in Pakistan. Over time, most of them settled in the Attock and Rawalpindi districts of northern Punjab.

Many believe the Ghebas are descendants of a Rajput ruler named Raja Dayanand. His grandson, Rai Shankar, had a son named Rai Gheba. Rai Gheba later became a Muslim and was given the title 'Gheba Khan'. Since then, the Ghebas have been Muslims and have owned a lot of land in their areas.

Some Gheba families have a different belief. They think they are not Rajputs but are actually Barlas Mughals. However, this idea is not widely supported by historical evidence.

Gheba Villages and Land

No matter their exact origins, the Ghebas are still among the largest landowners in northern Punjab, Pakistan. Their most important village in the Attock area is Kot Fateh Khan. This village is part of a large estate called a Jagir, which belongs to the Sardar of Kot.

What Ghebas Do

Most Gheba people are landowners. They are mainly involved in farming and other agricultural activities.
