Ghostzilla was a special kind of web browser made for computers using Microsoft Windows. It was built using parts of Mozilla, which is another well-known web browser. What made Ghostzilla unique was its ability to hide itself. It could run inside another program, like an email app such as Microsoft Outlook. This made it look like you were just reading an email, even though you were actually browsing the internet!

Between May 2004 and January 2005, the people who created Ghostzilla removed it from their website. They worried it could be used in ways that were not good. Later, they put it back online, but they added warnings. These warnings told users about the possible problems if the browser was used for the wrong reasons. Since February 2007, the website for Ghostzilla has been closed, and the browser is no longer available.

Features of Ghostzilla

Ghostzilla had some interesting features that helped it stay hidden:

  • The Ghostzilla window would disappear when you moved your mouse away from it. This made it easy to quickly hide what you were doing.
  • Users could change settings to control how much the browser tried to hide. For example, you could set it so that pictures would not show up unless you moved your mouse over them. Another option was to display all text as plain grey on a white background. This made web pages look very simple and less like a typical website.
