Giang Thu Nguyen, born Nguyễn Thu Giang on October 2, 1985, in Hanoi, is an amazing person who is both a talented chess player and a brilliant mathematician! She was born in Vietnam and later moved to Australia, becoming a Vietnamese-Australian.

Giang is a senior lecturer in Applied Mathematics at the University of Adelaide. In the world of chess, she holds the title of Woman FIDE Master (WFM). She has proudly represented Australia in many big chess tournaments called Chess Olympiads. She has also won the South Australian women's chess championship four times and the main South Australian championship once.

Giang Nguyen: A Chess Champion

Giang Nguyen started playing chess when she was nine years old. She quickly showed how good she was at the game.

Early Chess Success in Vietnam

In 1998, Giang won a gold medal in the Vietnamese Junior Girls Under 13 Championship. The next year, in 1999, she earned a silver medal in the Vietnamese Junior Girls Under 15 Championship.

Giang first played for Vietnam in an international competition in 1998. This was the World Rapid Girls Under 14 Championship held in Disneyland, Paris. She continued to achieve great things for Vietnam. In 1999, she won a gold medal at the Asian Girls Under 14 Championship. She also earned silver medals at the 2nd Children of Asia International Children Sports Games in 2000 and the ASEAN Girls Under 16 Championship in 2000.

Moving to Australia and New Achievements

In 2001, Giang moved to Adelaide, Australia. She continued her chess journey there. In 2002, she tied for third place in the Australian Junior Championship in Sydney.

Since 2008, Giang Nguyen has been playing chess for Australia. She has represented Australia in eight Chess Olympiads. These big international team tournaments happened in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022, and 2024. In the 2012 Olympiad, she played very well, scoring 6 out of 9 points. Because of this great performance, she was given the special title of Woman FIDE Master (WFM).

Giang has also won important championships in South Australia. She won the main South Australian championship in 2014. She also won the South Australian women's championship four times: in 2003, 2006, 2007, and 2008.

Giang Nguyen: A Brilliant Mathematician

Besides being a chess star, Giang Nguyen is also a very smart mathematician.

Her Journey in Mathematics

Giang finished her PhD in mathematics from the University of South Australia (UniSA) in 2009. She was only 23 years old at the time! This made her the youngest person to get a PhD from UniSA. She was also the second youngest from any university in South Australia. Her special research project was about complex math problems.

Today, Giang Nguyen is a senior lecturer in Applied Mathematics at the University of Adelaide. This means she teaches advanced math to university students. In 2019, she received a special award called the South Australian Tall Poppy Science Award. This award celebrates excellent young scientists in Australia.
