Gianluca Cristiano Busio (pronounced jahn-LOO-kuh BOO-zee-oh; born May 28, 2002) is an American professional soccer player. He plays as a midfielder for the Italian club Venezia. Gianluca also plays for the United States national team.

Playing for Clubs

Starting with Sporting Kansas City

Gianluca Busio was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. He joined the Sporting Kansas City youth academy in 2016. Before that, he played for North Carolina Fusion.

On August 25, 2017, Gianluca signed a special "Homegrown Player" contract with Sporting Kansas City. This made him one of the youngest players ever to sign with a Major League Soccer (MLS) club. He was only 15 years old at the time.

He played his first professional game on April 4, 2018. He started for Sporting Kansas City's team in the United Soccer League, called Swope Park Rangers. They won the game 1–0.

Busio made his first MLS appearance for Sporting Kansas City on July 28, 2018. He came into the game as a substitute. A week later, on August 4, he started his first MLS game. In that game, he made his first assist, helping his team score the winning goal. He was the third-youngest player to start an MLS match in history.

Moving to Venezia

On August 9, 2021, Busio moved to Serie A side Venezia in Italy. This was a big move for him. The transfer fee was a record for Venezia.

He played his first game for Venezia on August 27, 2021. He scored his first goal for the club on October 1, 2021. It was a last-minute goal that helped his team get a 1–1 draw.

Playing for His Country

Youth National Teams

In October 2019, Gianluca was chosen to play for the United States team in the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil. He played an important role for the U17 team.

Senior National Team Debut

On July 11, 2021, Busio made his first appearance for the senior national team. He played in a CONCACAF Gold Cup group match against Haiti.

He was also part of the team for the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He scored his first goal for the senior national team on July 2, 2023. This goal happened in his home state of North Carolina, against Trinidad and Tobago. He also played a key part in a quarter-final match against Canada.

In October 2023, Busio was called up to the United States under-23 national team. He played in friendly matches against Mexico and Japan.

About Gianluca's Life

Gianluca Busio has Italian family roots through his father, who was born in Brescia, Italy. He also has Italian citizenship. His mother is African-American.

He has an older sister named Ilaria and an older brother named Matteo. Matteo also plays soccer at UNC-Charlotte. Gianluca has said that his brother Matteo is his biggest inspiration.
