Gibraltar House is like an embassy for Gibraltar in London, United Kingdom. Gibraltar is a small British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of Spain. This special office, also called the Representative of Gibraltar, helps people from Gibraltar who are visiting or living in the UK.

You can find Gibraltar House on Strand in Aldwych, London. It works as an informal consulate, which means it helps Gibraltarian citizens with official matters. It is also a tourist information centre where you can learn about Gibraltar. Plus, it helps Gibraltarian patients who travel to the UK for medical treatment.

History of Gibraltar House

The very first Gibraltar House was a small office for tourists. It opened in the early 1970s on Northumberland Avenue in London. Helen Gordon was its first Director.

Later, another Gibraltar Tourist Office opened in Trafalgar Square. John Joe Gomez was in charge of that office. Soon after, a much larger office opened at 179 Strand. Jose Rosado directed this office, and later Richard Garcia took over.

Albert Poggio's Role

In 1989, Albert Poggio became the Director of Gibraltar House. He has held this important job for a long time. For a short period between 2011 and 2012, Peter Canessa was the Director.

Albert Poggio had actually suggested creating a "social centre" in London way back in 1969. He was the Chairman of the Gibraltar Group. This group brought together Gibraltarians who lived outside Gibraltar, known as expatriates.

Moving to a New Location

In 2009, Gibraltar House moved to its current location. It is now at 150 Strand, which is still in London.
