Early Life and Education
Gideon Patt was born in Jerusalem during a time when the area was called the Mandate era. This was before Israel became an independent country.
He served in the Nahal brigade, which is a special unit in the Israeli army. After his military service, he went to New York University. There, he studied economics and earned a bachelor's degree.
Political Career
Gideon Patt began his political journey in the late 1960s.
Joining the Knesset
In 1969, Gideon Patt ran for the Knesset, which is Israel's parliament. He was part of the Gahal party. Although he didn't get a seat right away, he joined the Knesset on January 29, 1970. He took the place of another member who had passed away.
He was re-elected to the Knesset in 1973 and again in 1977.
Ministerial Roles
After the 1977 elections, Gideon Patt was appointed as the Minister of Housing and Construction. He served in this role in the government led by Menachem Begin.
In January 1979, he took on a new role as the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Tourism.
Changes in Government Roles
After the 1981 elections, the jobs of Tourism Minister and Industry and Trade Minister were separated. Gideon Patt continued to hold both positions for a short time. In August 1981, he gave up the Tourism job.
Following the 1984 elections, he became the Minister of Science and Development. He held this position until 1988.
After the 1988 elections, he returned to the role of Minister of Tourism. He served in this capacity until 1992.
Retirement from Politics
Gideon Patt kept his seat in the Knesset after the 1992 elections. However, the government was then formed by the Labor party, and he was no longer part of the cabinet (the group of top ministers).
He decided not to run for re-election in 1996 and retired from politics.
