Gahal was an important political group in Israel from 1965 to 1973. It was a political party, which is a group of people who share similar ideas about how the country should be run. Gahal's full name was "Gush Herut Liberalim," which means "Freedom-Liberal Bloc" in Hebrew. This group was formed by two main parties joining together.

What Was Gahal?

Gahal was a political alliance, which means two or more groups decided to work together. It was created when the Herut Party and the Liberal Party of Israel decided to team up. This alliance brought together different ideas and strengths from both groups.

How Gahal Started

The Gahal alliance was started by Menachem Begin. At that time, Begin was the leader of the Herut Party. He believed that by joining forces with the Liberal Party, they could become a stronger voice in Israeli politics. So, in 1965, Gahal was officially formed.

What Gahal Believed In

Gahal had some clear beliefs that came from its two founding parties.

  • The Liberal Party cared a lot about how the government spent money. They wanted the government to be careful and not spend too much. This idea is called being "fiscally conservative."
  • The Herut Party was very focused on keeping Israel safe and strong. They believed in a strong national security system.

So, Gahal was a party that cared about both careful spending and strong defense for Israel.

Gahal Becomes Likud

Gahal continued as a political force for several years. Then, in 1973, it joined with several other political groups. These included the Free Centre, the National List, and the Greater Israel movement. All these groups came together to form a new, larger political party called Likud. Menachem Begin also became the leader of this new Likud party. This was a big step in Israeli politics.
