Herut facts for kids
The Herut Party (which means "freedom" in Hebrew) was an important political party in Israel. It was founded by Menachem Begin in 1948, right after Israel became an independent country. Herut was a right-wing Zionist party, meaning they strongly believed in the Jewish people's right to their own homeland in Israel.

What Were Herut's Main Ideas?
Herut believed that all of the land known as British Mandatory Palestine belonged to the Jewish people. They felt very strongly about this.
Important Beliefs
The Herut Party also thought that security was extremely important for Israel. They wanted Israel to be strong and safe.
Disagreement Over German Payments
One thing Herut was strongly against was Israel accepting money from West Germany. This money was offered as an apology for the terrible events of the Holocaust. Herut believed that no amount of money could make up for what happened, and they did not want Israel to take it.
Herut and Other Leaders
Israel's first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, had very different ideas from Herut. He thought Herut's views were too extreme.
Forming Alliances
Menachem Begin, the leader of Herut, was not a Socialist. Socialists believe in more government control over the economy and society. Because Begin had different ideas, he decided to team up with another group called the Liberal Party. Together, they formed a new group called the Liberal-Freedom Bloc. In Hebrew, this alliance was known as Gush Herut Liberalim, or simply Gahal.
