Gil Juco Puyat Sr. (born September 1, 1907 – died March 23, 1980) was an important Filipino leader. He was a politician and a successful businessman.

He served as a Senator in the Philippines from 1951. He continued until 1972. At that time, President Ferdinand Marcos closed Congress and declared Martial Law. Gil Puyat also served as the Senate President from 1967 to 1972.

Early Life and Education

Gil Puyat was born in Manila, Philippines. His father, Gonzalo Puyat, was a pioneer in Philippine industry. Gil learned about business from his father at a young age. He helped manage the family business, which made billiard tables and bowling alleys.

He studied commerce at the University of the Philippines. He was a very good student and graduated at the top of his class. Even while studying, he learned a lot about money, production, and managing people. He was also a member of the Pan Xenia Fraternity and Upsilon Sigma Phi.

Career Beginnings

Gil Puyat became a member of the Rotary Club of Manila. At the same time, he was a young economics professor. He taught at the University of the Philippines. His skills in managing the family business caught the attention of President Manuel L. Quezon.

President Quezon wanted the Philippines to become more industrial. He named Gil Puyat as the dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of the Philippines. Gil was only 33 years old then. He also became well-known in international business. In 1948, he was named "Business Leader of the Year." In 1949, he was called "Civic Leader of the Year."

He also received awards for his community work. In 1953, he was honored for helping start the Community Chest of Greater Manila. He was also recognized for his leadership in business, economics, and politics. He was also honored for his service to young people.

Political Journey

In 1951, Gil Puyat was elected as a Senator. He served in the Philippine Senate for many years. He continued until 1972 when Martial Law was declared. From 1967, he held a very important position. He became the Senate President.

As a lawmaker, Senator Puyat worked on many reforms. He helped improve how public works funds were used.

Business Ventures

Gil Puyat was a successful businessman. He founded several companies. These include Manila Banking Corporation, which is now Chinabank Savings. He also started Manila Bankers Life Insurance Corporation.

He also founded the Loyola Group of Companies. This group includes Loyola Plans Consolidated Inc., Group Developers Inc., and Loyola Memorial Chapels and Crematorium Inc. Loyola Plans Consolidated Inc. started in 1968. It is the oldest pre-need company still operating today. Group Developers was the first to create memorial parks in the Philippines. Loyola Memorial Chapels was also the first to use modern cremation technology.

Family Life

Gil Puyat was the third child of Gonzalo Puyat and Nicasia Juco. Both his parents were from Guagua, Pampanga. He married Eugenia Guidote. She was an accountant and a trained opera singer. They had seven children together. Their names were Gil Jr., Vicente, Antonio, Victor, Jesusa, Alfonso, and Eugenia.

Later Life and Passing

In 1978, Gil Puyat became a member of the Order of St. Gregory the Great. This is an honor given by the Pope. He passed away two years later, on March 23, 1980. He died from a heart attack, which was a complication of an asthma attack. He was buried on March 28, 1980. His family mausoleum is in Loyola Memorial Park, Marikina.
