Gilbert "Gillie" Harrison (born June 13, 1858 – died November 9, 1894) was a talented English stamp collector and rugby union player. He was so important in the world of stamp collecting that he was named one of the "Fathers of Philately" in 1921.
About Gilbert Harrison
Gilbert Harrison, also known as Gillie, was born in Cottingham, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. He became famous for his skills both on the rugby field and in collecting stamps.
His Rugby Career
Gillie Harrison was a strong player for the England rugby team. He also played for and was the captain of Hull FC. Back then, Hull FC was a rugby union club.
He played as a forward. This means he played in positions like the front row, lock, or back row. These players are usually strong and help win the ball.
Gillie played for England in several matches:
- In 1877, he played against Ireland and Scotland.
- In 1879, he played against Scotland and Ireland.
- In 1880, he played against Scotland.
- In 1885, he played against Wales and Ireland.
His Love for Stamps
Besides rugby, Gilbert Harrison was a passionate philatelist. A philatelist is someone who collects and studies stamps.
In February 1889, he joined The Philatelic Society, London. This society is now known as The Royal Philatelic Society London. He was an expert on stamps from many places. These included Afghanistan, Portuguese India, Kashmir, and the United States.
He was especially known for his collection of United States stamped envelopes. He even won a gold medal for his display of these envelopes at the London Philatelic Exhibition 1890.
Sadly, Gilbert Harrison passed away on November 9, 1894, at the age of 36. He was working on a book about the early postage stamps of Afghanistan. After his death, his notes were used by Edward Denny Bacon to finish the book. It was later published as The Postage Stamps of Afghanistan.
