Gilbert Edmund Kaplan (born March 3, 1941 – died January 1, 2016) was an American businessman. He was known for publishing financial news. He also deeply loved the music of Gustav Mahler. Kaplan was an amateur conductor, meaning he conducted for fun. He was especially famous for conducting Mahler's Second Symphony.

Gilbert Kaplan's Life and Work

Gilbert Kaplan was born in New York City in 1941. He grew up in Lawrence, on Long Island. He went to Duke University and also studied at New York University School of Law.

In 1963, Kaplan started working as an economist. An economist studies how money and resources are made and used. He worked at the American Stock Exchange.

Starting a Magazine

In 1967, Kaplan created his own magazine. It was called Institutional Investor. This magazine shared important financial news. He was the publisher until 1990. He then became the editor-in-chief for two more years. He sold the magazine in 1984. The price was a secret, but people thought it was around $75 million.

His Love for Mahler's Music

Kaplan's interest in Mahler's Second Symphony began in 1965. He loved this piece of music very much. In 1981, he started taking lessons to learn how to conduct an orchestra.

He made his first public conducting performance in 1982. He rented a big hall in New York City. He led the American Symphony and a choir. A music critic wrote a positive review of his performance. After this, Kaplan conducted Mahler's Second Symphony over 100 times. He never accepted money for these performances.

Kaplan also owned the original handwritten music for Mahler's Second Symphony. This is called an autograph manuscript. He published a special copy of it in 1986. This allowed many people to see Mahler's original work. In 2016, this manuscript was sold for a record amount of money. He also owned one of Mahler's conducting sticks.

Kaplan recorded Mahler's Second Symphony twice. First, with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1987. Then, with the Vienna Philharmonic in 2002. The Second Symphony was the only full piece he conducted in public. He also recorded a part of Mahler's Fifth Symphony called the Adagietto.

Sharing Music with Others

For over ten years, Kaplan hosted a radio show. It was called Mad About Music. On this show, he talked to famous people about their favorite music. He also taught at the Juilliard School, a famous music school.

The Kaplan Foundation

Gilbert Kaplan created The Kaplan Foundation. This foundation is in New York City. Its main goal is to study and protect the music of Gustav Mahler.

The foundation has published special copies of Mahler's original music. These include the Second Symphony and the Adagietto from the Fifth Symphony.

The foundation also produced a recording called Mahler Plays Mahler. This recording uses special piano rolls. These rolls show how Mahler himself played his own music. They are the only recordings of Mahler as a performer.

The Kaplan Foundation has published several books about Mahler. These include:

  • Mahler Discography: A guide to over 2,700 recordings of Mahler's music.
  • Mahler's Concerts: A list of all the known performances Mahler conducted.
  • The Mahler Album: A book with all known photos and drawings of Mahler.

The foundation also works with music publishers. They help create new versions of Mahler's music. This includes new critical editions of the Second and Sixth Symphonies.

Personal Life

Gilbert Kaplan married Lena Biörck in 1970. She was an interior designer from Sweden. They had four children together. Gilbert Kaplan passed away in Manhattan in 2016. He was 74 years old.
