Gilbert Kennedy, 4th Earl of Cassilis (around 1541–14 December 1576) was an important Scottish nobleman. He was the son of Gilbert Kennedy, 3rd Earl of Cassilis and Margaret Kennedy. He became the 6th Lord Kennedy and 4th Earl of Cassilis on 28 November 1558.

Gilbert Kennedy married Margaret Lyon, who was the daughter of John Lyon, 7th Lord Glamis. After his marriage, he became a Protestant. They had two sons:

Gilbert Kennedy's Role in Scottish History

Gilbert Kennedy was a powerful figure in his time. He was known as the "King of Carrick" because he had a lot of influence and power in that area of Scotland.

He played a part in the history of Mary, Queen of Scots. He fought for her side in the Battle of Langside on 13 May 1568. This battle was a key moment in the struggles between Mary and her opponents.

His Reputation and Actions

According to some historical accounts, Earl Gilbert was known for being very keen on getting more land. He was said to have used tricky ways to gain control of new properties. For example, he wanted to control the Abbey of Glenluce. When the abbot died before a deal was finished, Gilbert was said to have used dishonest methods, like faking documents, to try and get the abbey's lands.

Conflict Over Land Rights

In 1565, Gilbert Kennedy was involved in a serious disagreement over land. He held Allan Stewart, who was the leader of Crossraguel Abbey, captive at Dunure Castle. Gilbert wanted to gain control over certain land rights belonging to Crossraguel Abbey.

He used harsh methods to try and force Stewart to agree to his demands. Stewart was eventually rescued by his brother-in-law, the Laird of Bargany. This rescue led to a long-lasting disagreement between the families of the Earls of Cassilis and the Lairds of Bargany.

Death of the Earl

Gilbert Kennedy, 4th Earl of Cassilis, died in 1576. He passed away after falling from his horse.
