Gilbert Lyttelton (born around 1540, died June 1, 1599) was an important English politician and a wealthy landowner. He was a member of the well-known Lyttelton family.
Gilbert Lyttelton's Life and Work
Gilbert Lyttelton was the oldest son of Sir John Lyttelton. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Worcestershire in 1570 and again in 1571. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the country's parliament.
When his father passed away, Gilbert inherited many family lands. These included estates in places like Frankley, Halesowen, Hagley, and Upper Arley. In 1584, he was chosen to be the High Sheriff of Worcestershire. A High Sheriff was a very important local official who helped keep law and order.
From about 1579 to 1588, Gilbert also worked as the Chief Steward for the lands owned by the Bishop of Worcester. This meant he helped manage these important properties. Gilbert Lyttelton died on June 1, 1599.
