Sir John Lyttelton (born October 28, 1519 – died February 15, 1590) was an important English nobleman, politician, and landowner. He was also a knight during the time of the Tudor period in England. He belonged to the famous Lyttelton family.

Life and Times of Sir John Lyttelton

John Lyttelton was the son of Sir John Littleton. His mother was Elizabeth Talbot. John also had a brother named George, who became a well-known lawyer. There is a special monument for George in St John the Baptist Church, Bromsgrove.
Early Career and Knighthood
John Lyttelton became an adult in 1541. In 1553, he was made the Constable of Dudley Castle. A constable was like a manager or guardian of the castle and its surrounding parks.
Later, in 1566, he was made a knight by Queen Elizabeth I herself. This special event happened at Kenilworth. Being knighted was a great honor.
Public Service and Land Ownership
Sir John Lyttelton was an active public servant. He was a member of the Council of Wales and the Marches. This council helped to govern parts of Wales and the border areas of England.
He also served as a Deputy Lieutenant and a Justice of the Peace for Worcestershire. A Deputy Lieutenant helped the main county leader, and a Justice of the Peace was a local judge who kept law and order.
Sir John also bought a lot of land. In 1558, he bought the manor of Halesowen. He bought the manor of Hagley in 1565. These lands, along with Frankley and Upper Arley (which he inherited), became the main family estates. Most of these lands have stayed with the Lyttelton family for a very long time.

Sir John Lyttelton married Bridget Pakington. She was the daughter of Sir John Pakington. Together, they had several children.
His Children
- Elizabeth Lyttleton (born 1546 – died 1594) married Sir Francis Willoughby in 1564. He was from Wollaton Hall in Nottinghamshire.
- His main heir was Gilbert (born around 1570 – died 1599). Gilbert later became the father of two other important family members, John and Humphrey.
- Margaret Lyttleton married Samuel Marrow in 1561. Their daughter, Bridget Marrow, later helped look after the jewels of Queen Anne of Denmark.
- Amphylis Lyttleton married William Barnaby. He was from Brockhampton.
