Gilbert Peche was an important English noble who lived in the late 1200s and early 1300s. He was known as the 1st Baron Pecche and the Lord of Brunne. Being a Baron meant he was a powerful landowner and advisor to the King.

Gilbert Peche was the son of Gilbert Peche and Joan de Grey. He grew up in a time when England was often involved in wars and political events.

Serving the King

Gilbert Peche served King Edward I of England in a military campaign. This was in a region called Gascony, which is now part of France. This campaign lasted from 1294 to 1303.

He was also called to join the English Parliament as a Baron. This meant he was an important noble who advised the King. He attended Parliament several times between 1299 and 1322.

Important Roles

In 1301, Gilbert Peche was one of the nobles who signed the Barons' Letter of 1301. This was a letter sent by English Barons to Pope Boniface VIII. It showed their power and influence.

Later, from 1316 to 1317, he held a very important job. He was the Seneschal of Gascony. A Seneschal was like a governor or a chief officer. They managed the King's lands and affairs in that region.

Gilbert Peche passed away in 1322.

Gilbert Peche was married to a woman named Iseult. Together, they had at least two sons:

  • Simon Peche (born 1305, died 1350). Simon married Agnes Holme and they had two children.
  • Gilbert Peche (born 1306, died 1349). He became the 2nd Baron Pecche. This Gilbert married Joan Watevile and they also had two children.

An interesting fact about Gilbert Peche's family is that his granddaughter, Katherine Pecche, is a direct ancestor of Oliver Cromwell. Oliver Cromwell was a very famous and important figure in English history, centuries later.
