The Gilbert Row, also known as Emery Row, is a cool group of old houses in the Walnut Hills neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. These houses are called rowhouses because they are built right next to each other in a line.
Built in 1889, the Gilbert Row includes six smaller homes and one larger building that was originally a store. A company called Thomas Emery's Sons, which built and sold properties, created these houses. They were designed by an architecture company called Steinkamp Brothers. The Gilbert Row became an example for many other buildings Thomas Emery's Sons built later.

What Makes Gilbert Row Special?
The buildings in Gilbert Row are mostly made of strong materials like stone and brick. One special building, the old store, also has parts made of iron.
Unique Design Features
Most of the houses have welcoming porches with sloped roofs. These porches have cool wooden posts with fancy carvings. They also feature decorative lattice work and brackets, which are special supports.
Queen Anne Style
What really makes Gilbert Row stand out is its architectural style. It's a great example of the Queen Anne style. This style was not often used for rowhouses in Cincinnati, making Gilbert Row quite unique!
A Historic Landmark
In May 1982, the Gilbert Row was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important because of their history or architecture. Gilbert Row was added because its buildings are well-preserved and show important architectural styles for the area.
Part of a Historic District
Just over a year later, a larger area in Walnut Hills became a historic district. This area is called the Gilbert-Sinton Historic District. The buildings of Gilbert Row are an important part of this larger historic area.
Modern Updates
Between 2005 and 2006, the Gilbert Row buildings were completely updated. They were changed into 12 townhomes and 6 condominiums.
Since 2017, the Walnut Hills neighborhood has been getting a fresh start. It's becoming a popular spot again for art, fun, and nightlife in Cincinnati.
